Campus Vaxholm is one of Stockholm's most modern secondary schools, with a focus on quality in teaching and the learning environment. The idea behind Campus Vaxholm was that it should be a natural meeting place for people of different ages and with different interests. Here, the local authority has brought together culture, a school, school sports, exercise and sports clubs. One part of Campus Vaxholm is Kronäng school, Vaxholm's new secondary school. The campus has also gained a new sports hall for school sports and club activities, and in the same area there is already a tennis hall, an ice rink, a football pitch and an outdoor spontaneous sports field.
"We love all the furniture families and the opportunities they give for variation, like the Fields family, for example. And it's sustainable, as well. We can find everything we want on the Kinnarps website. With Kinnarps, there are no limitations."
The interior designers at Cedervall were hooked by the Fields family because they like furniture families. The sofa groups are arranged in different colour schemes on each floor of the building, with the inspiration for the choice of colours taken from the map of Vaxholm. The blue is taken from the sea, the green from the surrounding countryside, the rosy red from the urban areas and the yellow from the paper old-fashioned maps were printed on. The colours have been customised to match the colours already used on the doors and carpets in the corridors.
In the classrooms, shades of grey predominate. This is a place for concentration and focus. In order to create a varied study environment in the classrooms, Origo tables and chairs at different heights are used, along with sofas, so that the pupils can choose what suits them best.
Fields easy chairs inside and outside the library create attractive islands for reading. An easy chair with a high back provides screening and creates calmness for the reader.
Kronäng school has been built and furnished in line with a new model where the fundamental idea is to give teachers and pupils better opportunities for instruction in different forms. Here there are open spaces, and large and small rooms connected with each other for more flexible teaching in both small and large groups. The result is a study landscape that is varied, relaxing and inspiring. It is equipped with sofas, booths, soft benches, desks and various types of chairs.
The right furniture was found by means of workshops with pupils and school staff. This included furnishing a demo classroom, where pupils and staff could evaluate different furniture.
The result of this is that much of the furniture for Campus Vaxholm comes from the Kinnarps furniture family – furniture series that offer great opportunities for variation while still giving a unified impression. This is what was needed to create the varied study environments while at the same time achieving a holistic feeling.
The public areas are dominated by the Fields family. Here there are sofas, easy chairs, pouffes and screens with tables, all to create spaces for every imaginable activity. With their high backs, the Fields sofas create a number of rooms within a room. Several groups of sofas, easy chairs and pouffes create meeting places for everyone in the corridor, while the high backs allow privacy for those who want it. The Fields family also includes screens that can create separate study places for one pupil or for several. This makes the corridors a good place to study during free periods.
For those who are waiting for the next lesson, Lean In is installed in some of the corridors. Lean In makes it extra-comfortable for us to give in to our natural behaviour – to lean against the wall while we are waiting. The furnishing is hung on the wall and forms an inviting soft support for the body. Lean In is particularly suitable for restricted spaces such as narrow corridors. It encourages new ways of integrating and meeting.
Sustainability was an important factor for Cedervall Arkitekter in their work on the interior design of Campus Vaxholm, and one of the reasons why they chose Kinnarps furniture. Together, we aim to create sustainable interior design solutions that give the study environment Vaxholm City Council wants to offer at Campus Vaxholm, with as little climate impact as possible.
